Former world number 1 and two-time Western and Southern Open champion Serena Williams was drawn in the same quarter with Great Britain’s Joanna Konta.
Williams, who reached the quarter final in Lexington with a win over her sister Venus, will make her debut against either Alison Van Uytvanck or a qualifier.
Serena is projected to meet Joanna Konta in a potential quarter final. The British player lost just one game against Williams in their most recent match in San José 2018.
Konta, who lost in the opening match against Marie Bouzkova in Lexington, will take on either Katerina Siniakova or a qualifier.
In the bottom half of the draw this year’s Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin will face either French player Alizé Cornet or Catherine McNally in the first round. Kenin won her maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne last January and claimed her second title in Lyon.
Kenin could face 2017 US Open finalist Madison Keys.
Top seed Karolina Pliskova will start her New York campaign against either Veronika Kudemertova or Ajla Tomljanovic in the opening round. Pliskova set up a potential quarter final against Aryna Sabalenka.
Sabalenka won the Premier 5 title in Doha, but she lost to Cori Gauff in the second round in Lexington. The Belarusian player could face either Belgian wildcard and former Grand Slam champion Kim Cljisters or Lexington champion Jennifer Brady. Cljisters lost to Garbine Muguruza in the first round in Dubai in her come-back last February.
US wildcard Venus Williams will play against Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the opening round. Venus has been drawn in the same section of the draw with number 4 seed and 2018 US Open champion Naomi Osaka, who will take on either Karolina Muchova or a qualifier.
