Swiss Davis Cup Captain Severin Luthi has confirmed that Roger Federer will return to training in mid-August after knee surgery.
This news comes after Roger Federer had to undergo a second knee operation as he made the most of tennis’ hiatus due to COVID-19.
Since his surgery, we haven’t heard an update from Federer, who will return to the ATP World Tour in 2021 and not rush his comeback.
However Severin Luthi has now given us a schedule for Federer’s rehabilitation schedule as he spoke in Biel ahead of the Pro Cup.
The Swiss Davis Cup captain states that Federer will resume tennis training in mid-August, “Roger has resumed physical training with Pierre Paganini. Tennis training is planned for mid-August,” Luthi said in a press conference.
Federer’s last competitive match was an Australian Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic, with tough wins against John Millman and Tennys Sandgren leading him to the last four.
Although nobody was too sure how quickly Federer would recover after his latest surgery, this latest positive news would suggest that Federer is on track for a return to the tour in 2021 as he aims to win one more grand slam before his career ends.
Although Federer can’t compete at the Pro Cup in Switzerland, there is no lack of star power at the event with Belinda Bencic, Patty Schnyder and Martina Hingis all competing this weekend.
