Former Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza said in an interview to EFE News that she would play at the US Open and at French Open. Muguruza has expressed her intention of playing at all possible tournaments leading up to the US Open.
Muguruza is aiming to win her third Grand Slam title after claiming at 2016 Roland Garros and at 2017 Wimbledon and finishing runner-up to Sofia Kenin in the 2020 Australian Open final last January. In Melbourne Muguruza beat four seeded players Elina Svitolina, Simona Halep and Kiki Bertens to reach her fourth Grand Slam final before losing to Kenin in three sets. Muguruza also reached the semifinals at the Shenzhen Open last January.
The Spanish player also won five doubles titles, reached the final at the 2015 WTA Finals and the doubles semifinals at 2014 Roland Garros with her teammate Carla Suarez Navarro.
“I am planning to play the US hard court tournaments in preparation for the US Open and clay court tournaments, if the situatioon allows it. Mental toughness is going to be the key for players when they return. It is a question of resistance and mental strength. Whoever is stronger will have the easiest path to victory”, said Muguruza.
The world number 16 admitted that i twill be shocking to play tournaments without spectators.
During the break the player of Venezuelan origin trained in Geneva, where she lives. She is currently coached by former tennis star Conchita Martinez.
