The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is still planning to stage the 2020 edition of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, the home of the US Open, from 31st August to 13th September.
New York is currently the epicentre of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the USA. The USTA explored the possiblity to move the tournament to other venues like Indian Wells or Orlando, but is determined to stay in New York.
“The USTA’s goal is to hold the 2020 US Open in New York on its currently scheduled dates. We understand that there is a great deal of speculation regarding the USTA’s planning for the 2020 US Open. We would like to clarify that while we are exploring every possibility around the US Open, the potential to shift the event location or date is not at the forefront at this point at this point in time. A final decision on the decision on the tournament will be made in mid-to-late June. Paramount with our decisions regarding the US Open will be the health and safety of all involved, in any capacity, with the tournament”, said USTA spokesperson Chris Widmaier.
Widmaier is open to the possibility of staging the US Open behind closed doors. It is still uncertain when the tennis tour will resume in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Tennis could be one of the last sports to get back to normal due to the travel restrictions.
“The USTA’s goal is to hold the US Open in New York on its scheduled dates”, said Widmaier.
