Dominic Thiem works like a ‘true champion’ and has what it takes to reach the pinnacle of the sport, according to his coach.

Nicolas Massu, who is best known for winning the men’s title at the 2004 Olympic Games, has outlined his ultimate goals with the Austrian star during an Instagram live broadcast. The two started working together during the early part of 2019 and almost instantly achieved success on the Tour. With Thiem claiming his maiden Masters title in Indian Wells. Since then the world No.3 has gone on to win another four titles as well as reach the final of two grand slam tournaments.

Speaking about his partnership with Thiem, Massu has stated that he wants to take him to world No.1. Outside of the Big Three, only one player has occupied the top spot since February 2nd 2004. That was Andy Murray for 41 weeks between 2016-2017. Nevertheless, Thiem has been named as one of the most likely successors to Federer and Co. In 2019 Novak Djokovic was the only person to have won the same amount of tournaments as him on the ATP Tour.

“He is currently in third place in the ranking and is one of the fittest players on the circuit,” Punto de Break quoted Massu as saying. “In my head it is to help him advance in the tennis aspect and lead him to number One of the world.’
“Dominic works as a true champion and his parents have educated him in that way. In addition to being a good tennis player, he is a boy who is very loved on the circuit.”

Saying he wants to help the 26-year-old fulfil his ‘dream,’ Massu admits that there are still improvements needed. Thiem was a set away from claiming his first major title at the Australian Open, but was edged out by nemesis Djokovic.

“Simply what I want is that Thiem can fulfil his dream. He has a lot of talent, he is an outstanding player and in addition to being consolidated today, he is one of the players predicted to have a great future on the circuit.” He said.
“He still has things that he has to improve and I as a coach am obliged to make him improve so that he grows as a tennis player. That is the mentality we have as a team.”

Thiem is currently back in his home country during the tour suspension. Earlier this week he was able to resume training after the Austrian government relaxed their COVID-19 restrictions. Prior to the Tour suspension, Thiem won nine out of 13 matches played so far this season.
