Thiago Seyboth Wild has become the first professional player on the tour to announce that they have contracted Covid-19.

The 20-year-old Brazilian has said he is at home recovering in self-isolation following the diagnoses. The deadly coronavirus includes symptoms such as fever, a dry cough and shortness of breath. Although the majority recover from the virus, elderly people and those with underlying health conditions are most at risk. There have been over 6800 deaths in Italy alone linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a video uploaded to his Twitter account, the 20-year-old said he is ‘following doctor’s orders’ and has pleaded with the public to stay safe and follow the rules. Around the world, many countries have been placed on lockdown due to the virus.

“Hey guys. I just wanted to let you know that I’ve contracted the COVID-19 but I’ve self-isolated myself for the past week. And I’ve been taking care of myself and following the doctor’s instructions.” Seyboth Wild said.

In a separate video, where he addresses fans in Portuguese, Seyboth Wild said 10 days ago he had a cold and fever. Then he underwent a test for Covid-19, which turned out positive. He said he is feeling better now, but stressed how serious the illness can be.

The diagnosis comes just over a month after the Next Gen player achieved his best ever run on the ATP Tour to date. At the Santiago Open in Chile, he stunned the field by winning his maiden ATP title as a wild card entrant. In the final he ousted Norway’s Casper Ruud in a marathon three-set encounter. As a result of his triumph, he rocketed 60 places up the world rankings to a career best of 113th in the world. He is currently ranked 114th.

“This is a reminder for you all to stay at home, take care of the people you love and help us all to not spread this disease. Stay home, and stay safe.” He stressed.

A former US Open boy’s champion, Seyboth Wild last played a match in the Davis Cup on March 6th. In Adelaide, he lost in three sets to Australia’s John Millman.

At present all competitive tennis tournaments have been suspended until June due to the pandemic. Although due to the ongoing situation, it is possible that the suspension could extend.
