Japan’s Yuichi Sugita fended off six of seven break points in his 6-3 6-0 win over Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano at the Open Maharashtra in Pune with five breaks of serve.
Sugita set up a second round match against Serbia’s Viktor Troicki, who edged past Sumit Nagal 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 6-1. Nagal lost to Roger Federer in four sets in the opening round at the US Open. Troicki broke twice in the first and seventh games to win the first set 6-2. Both players traded breaks in the fifth and sixth games en route to the tie-break. Nagal converted his second set point to win the tie-break 7-4. Troicki broke twice in a row to win the third set 6-1.
German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe beat Ivo Karlovic 6-3 6-4 with a break in each set securing his spot in the second round, where he will face Ricardas Berankis.
Salvatore Caruso came back from one set down to Ramkumar Ramanathan 3-6 6-4 7-5. Caruso saved two break points at 5-5 in the third set before sealing the win with a break at 30 in the 11th game.
