Novak Djokovic is hoping that his earlier than usual return to Australia will boost his chances of adding to his grand slam tally.

The world No.2 has started his past four seasons in the Middle East by playing at the Qatar Open. However, this time round he will be kicking-off proceedings in Brisbane at the inaugural ATP Cup. Where he will be aiming to lead Serbia to victory. It will be only the second time he has played an ATP Tournament in the Australian city and the first since 2009.

Set to play in humid conditions with the weather projected to be in the range of 30 degrees, the 16-time grand slam champion admits that he is still adapting to the conditions.

“I am still getting acclimatised. Back in Europe where I reside it is not as warm, it takes a bit of time, that is why I came here earlier,” Djokovic told reporters on Wednesday.
“The concept of ATP Cup does give us an opportunity to represent your country and be part of a team, which is not something we experience during the year very often.
“It does feed you with energy and motivation. It’s a lot of intensity on the court but also a lot of fun and relaxation off it.”

Djokovic is set to lead his country in their ties against France, Chile and South Africa. The winner of each group and the two highest-scoring second place teams will then progress to the knockout stages. Also on the Serbian team is Dusan Lajovic, Nikola Milojevic, Viktor Troicki and Nikola Cacic.

The hope is that the ATP Cup will place Djokovic in a strong position ahead of the first grand slam of the season. He is bidding to defend his title at the Australian Open to become the first man in history to win the event for an eighth time. Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets during last year’s final.

“I think so,” he replied when asked if the team event is perfect preparation for Melbourne.
“I haven’t been playing any Aussie opening week of the season tournament for a while.
“I have been playing mostly in Qatar.
“I think (starting year in Brisbane) can help (Australian Open chances).
“I am here earlier than most years. I get acclimatised. I love being here – it feeds me with positive energy.”

As the head of the ATP Player Council, the 32-year-old have previously expressed concerns about the ATP Cup and rival event the Davis Cup co-existing in the future. However, he has praised the team element in a sport that is known for its individuality.

“More than 90 percent of the time, we’re playing as individuals and we don’t have too many team events,” he explained.
“This is going to bring together a lot of nations and, for me personally, it will be a very nice and proud moment to represent my country. An event like this is truly going to make an impact.”

Djokovic’s first match is scheduled to be against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson on Saturday.
