Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have spoke out on Canada’s controversial decision to withdraw from the doubles in their victory over the USA last night.
Both Djokovic and Murray were victorious today in their opening matches of their Davis Cup Finals campaigns in Madrid.
Their victories were contrasting after the Serb thrashed Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2 6-1 while Andy Murray edged out Tallon Griekspoor in a last set tiebreak in 2 hours and 51 minutes.

After their matches though, the main talking point was the situation that involved the Canadian team during their win over the USA.
The Canadians won both of their singles to seal victory over the Americans and their place in the last eight of the Davis Cup Finals.
However with the tie already won, Canada pulled out of the doubles handing the USA a walkover victory and a controversial 6-0 6-0 victory against their name.
As sets and games won could prove vital in securing a Quarter-Final spot as one of the best second place nations, the rule has been criticised by many experts.
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also criticised the rule and Canada’s decision, “I don’t think that’s good, I think they should have played the tie (match),” Murray said.
“I personally don’t like that. That shouldn’t be allowed to be honest, I think everyone should be obliged to at least come out and play,” Djokovic added.
According to the rules, “The player(s) must undergo an examination by the Independent Doctor, who must complete the ‘ITF Medical Certification’ form.”
In response to the claims the ITF have said that the three Canadian players were passed unfit by three independent doctors.
The USA will play Italy this evening in Madrid, with a USA victory set to cause more controversy to this bizarre rule.
Meanwhile Djokovic and Murray will both play for their countries as they both look to lead Serbia and Great Britain respectively to the Quarter-Finals of the Davis Cup Finals.
