Swedish tennis rising star Mikael Ymer beat Frenchman Ugo Humbert 4-3 (7-2) 1-4 4-2 4-1 in the first match of the evening session at the third edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals at the Allianz Cloud in Milan.
Ymer got the first break of the match in the second game on the deciding point to race out to a 3-0 lead after 13 minutes. Humbert broke back in the fifth game after a double fault from Ymer and held his serve to win his third consecutive game setting up a tie-break. The 21-year-old Swedish player earned his first mini-break with his forehand to seal the tie-break 7-2 on his first set point. Humbert received medical treatment after the first set.
Humbert broke serve in the fourth game and closed out the second set 4-1 at love with an ace in the fifth game.
Ymer saved a break point before winning the first game of the third set on the deciding point. Both players traded holds until the sixth game when Ymer got the break at 30 with a double fault and a pair of unforced errors from Humbert.
Ymer converted his second break point chance in the second game of the fourth set and held his serve to race out to a 3-0 lead. The Swede won his final service game at 15 to close out the set 4-1 after 1 hour and 42 minutes.
“It was a lot of fun. I saw how big the arena is. I was a little bit nervous before going out there, but I felt good from the start. I managed to stay in the rallies and get the early break. There were a lot of positive things”,said Ymer.
