“I’m obviously grateful that at this stage of my life I am still able to compete at this level in a slam.” He said following the match. “Sometimes we have to remind ourselves of these blessings, you know, sometimes we take things for granted. It’s wonderful to be here on this very special tennis court.”
“Today was a straight sets win, but I’ve never faced Carballes Baena before. He’s quite solid from the back of the court. I’m quite pleased with my performance and I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Defending champion Djokovic headed into his first ever clash with the Spaniard as the overwhelming favourite. Prior to their meeting, the world No.1 has won 277 grand slam matches compared to Carballes Baena’s tally of two. Furthermore, he has won 74 more ATP titles and has earned a staggering $133.3 million more in prize money.

However, Djokovic didn’t have it all his own way to begin with. Contending with some speedy serving from across the court, the top seed was made to work hard during the first set. Seeing five break points come and go. Nevertheless, it was the sixth time lucky for him. Leading 5-4 and increasing pressure on his rival, Djokovic rallied to a duo of set points. Converting his first after a Carbellas Baena backhand crashed into the net.

After clinching the lead, the 32-year-old rapidly gathered in momentum. Producing a selection of skills to remind the men’s field why he is one of the key contenders for the title in New York. Strolling towards his 14th first round win at the US Open, Djokovic broke once more in the third set before closing the match out with a forehand cross-court winner.

“It takes a little bit of time for you to feel comfortable on the court so the first set I had some break points early on and later I managed to capitalize on the opportunities when they were presented in the important moments. That’s what matters.” Djokovic reflected about his performance.
“It’s not the first time I’ve been in the second round of a grand slam. I know what I need to do and keep going. “ He added.

Djokovic has now won 34 out of his last 35 matches played at a grand slam level. His only loss was to Dominic Thiem at the French Open.

The top seed will play either Sam Querry or Juan Igancio Londero in the second round.
