Former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic has become the latest name to withdraw from the US Open.

The world No.22 has been forced to pull out of the final grand slam of 2019 due to a glute injury. Raonic hasn’t played a match since retiring in the second round of the Rogers Cup against compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime. Furthermore, the Canadian has also undergone four MRI scans on his back already this season.

“I’m feeling it in the back of the glut. It’s progressed more than it was in Washington. Felt good in the first match. It wasn’t that taxing of a match.” He said following his exit from the Rogers Cup earlier this month.
“Started having pains during the night last night. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is at this point.”

It is the second time the 28-year-old has missed the US Open in the past three years. He was also forced out of the 2017 tournament due to a wrist injury. Raonic has played 11 tournaments so far this season, but missed the entire clay-court swing due to a knee issue.

Replacing the Canadian in the draw will be lucky loser Kamil Majchrzak. The Polish player is a former Youth Olympic gold medallist and is currently at a career ranking high of 94th in the world. He will play Christian Garin in the first round.

Another player to withdraw on the eve on the grand slam was Germany’s Mona Barthel. Barthel, who hasn’t played a match since mid July, pulled out due to a left foot injury. Taking her spot will be Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens who will make her 11th main draw appearance in the event. Flipkens will play Lesia Tsurenko.
