WIMBLEDON: Naomi Osaka’s dream of reclaiming the world No.1 spot has ended after she suffered her worst-ever performance at the Wimbledon Championships.
The two-time grand slam champion suffered a shock 7-6(4), 6-2, loss to Yania Putintseva. A player who was playing on Centre Court for the first time in her career. Osaka’s all or nothing game featured 38 unforced errors, which more than five times that of her opponent. Although many of them were triggered by some fierce defensive play from Putintseva.
“I just don’t think I played that well. But I wasn’t surprised because I’ve played her, like, twice already.” Osaka commented about her loss.
It was evident how gutted the 21-year-old was about her loss during her press conference. Giving short replies to questions as she held back the tears. When asked if she sought any comfort from the fact the women’s game is known for its unpredictability and depth, Osaka saw the opposite.
“That makes me feel worse because now there’s going to be more people that are saying, like exactly what you’re saying. So, no, it doesn’t make me feel better.” She said.
Despite her misfortunes, Osaka is refusing to pass the blame to anybody else. Dismissing the idea that her age played a factor. She is currently the youngest player in the world’s top 10.
“I wouldn’t blame my age on anything. I’ve done a lot of good things. I’ve done a lot of bad things. But I’m not the type of person that would say because I’m young I can get away with doing certain things.” She stated.
It all got too much for the world No.2 in her press conference. When questioned about dealing with fame on the tour, she halted proceedings. Turning to the media invigilator and saying ‘Can I leave? I feel like I’m about to cry.’ She then left the room and didn’t return.
The tearful ending has failed to dent her future in the sport and the threat she poses to others on the tour. Puntinseva believes Osaka does have what it takes to conquer the grass one year. Even if 2019 was a bit of a disaster for her.
“I think she can be one of the most dangerous players on the grass in the future because she has a big serve, which is very important on the grass. She has an aggressive mentality to do her first shots aggressive. On grass, it’s very important because you cannot be offensive.” The Kazak analyzed.
As a result of her loss, Osaka has only won one match on the grass this season.
