WIMBLEDON: Top seed Novak Djokovic has become only the second man in history to reach the last 32 at Wimbledon for an 11th consecutive year after downing Denis Kudla in straight sets.
The world No.1 was in solid form against the underdog as he withstood glimmers of fierce play from across the court to win 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Breaking down Kudla’s serve with relative ease by converting seven out of 13 break points. It was evident as to why there were 110 paces separating the two. Djokovic’s consistency was too much for the opponent as he hit 37 winners to 18 unforced errors.
“I’m pleased with my game overall. There were some moments in the match where I could have done better.” Djokovic told BBC TV.
“I dropped my serve a couple of times, but it was a solid performance. I was serving well, returning well and a high percentage of first serves won.”
All three sets took a familiar role with the Serbian breaking immediately. In the first two, he was a double break up before Kudla was able to get any momentum. Generating cheers from the crowd on Center Court. In the third, an eight-point winning streak saw him race to a 2-0 lead. Closing in on victory, a Kudla forehand mistake gifted Djokovic another break and this time the chance to serve the match out. Three match points came and went before he prevailed on his fourth opportunity after an exchange concluded with his opponent hitting a shot into the net.
“My ambitions are high and I have been fortunate to do well in slams. Especially at Wimbledon. But I only have to think of my next challenge and take one step at a time.” The 15-time grand slam champion reflected.
Awaiting the 32-year-old in the net round will be Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who is playing in only his second Wimbledon main draw. The Polish world No.48 defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-6(7), 6-3, earlier in the day. It will be the second meeting between the two this year after the French Open where Djokovic dropped just eight games on route to victory.
“It’s a different surface so it will be a different match up. He’s got big serve, one of the top players on the next gen. He is a very nice guy, we practiced a lot and I know his game well.” Djokovic previewed.
Wednesday’s win was Djokovic 90th on the grass.
