Barty going for the double
A former girls champion at Wimbledon back in 2011, Barty is now on the hunt for the senior trophy. Currently on a 12-match winning streak, the Australian could join an elusive club should she become Wimbledon champion.
Since 1968, only seven women have managed to claim both the French Open and Wimbledon titles within the same year. Over the past 30 years, only Serena and Steffi Graf have achieved the milestone.
“It’s impossible to play it as a normal event because Wimbledon isn’t a normal event. For us, in my opinion, it’s one of the most incredible weeks on the calendar. I try and come out here and enjoy it.” Barty said during her pre-Wimbledon press confrence.
“It’s a little bit bizarre coming into Wimbledon having only played one grass court tournament. We (my team) feel like we’ve been striking the ball really well, we’re comfortable with the grass under our feet.’
“Now it’s about coming out this week and try to continue to do all the little things right, the simple things right, so come my first-round match I can play as best as I can, try the best that I can.”
Barty could also become the third Australian woman to win the title in the Open Era.
