Wimbledon -

The draw for the men’s singles tournament at Wimbledon has taken place with a series of seeds set to endure a tough opening week at the grand slam.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has avoided playing any of his fellow Big Three rivals until the final after being drawn in the other half. Meaning that Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could clash in the semi-finals of the tournament. Meanwhile, Djokovic could play Kevin Anderson if the last four should the draw goes according to the seedings.

The world No.1 will open up his campaign against Phillip Kohlschreiber. Djokovic has a winning 10-2 head-to-head record against the German and has won two out of their three meetings on the tour this season. Those two wins were on the clay and his loss was at the Miami Open in March. Further ahead, the Serbian could play Malek Jaziri, Duan Lajovic and Gael Monfils during the first week.

Rafael Nadal, who is yet to play a grass-court event this year, has a tough task ahead in his bid to win a third title at Wimbledon. The Spaniard will open up against Japan’s Yuichia Sugita. A qualifier who has previously showed good potential on the surface. Then a mouthwatering clash could follow between him and Kick Kyrgios, who opens against Jordan Thompson. Kyrgios isn’t the only stern challenge facing Nadal in what is a brutal draw for him.

Should he defeat the Australian, both Denis Shapovalov and Marin Cilic are lurking in Nadal’s section. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Bernard Tomic are also contenders to reach the third round and could take on the Spaniard.

Eight-time champion Roger Federer has a more straightforward challenge compared to that of Nadal. The second seed will start his campaign against South Africa’s Lloyd Harris, who has only ever won one grand slam match in his career. In the second round, Noah Rubin or Jay Clarke awaits. Federer has reached the quarter-finals or better in 15 out of the past 16 Wimbledon tournaments.

Outside of the three big names, others have been handed a tricky draw. Fourth seed Anderson will be playing only his second tournament since Miami after missing a large chunk of the tour due to an elbow injury. He will start against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who is playing in the doubles with Andy Murray. Dominic Thiem takes on Sam Querrey, who has been gaining in momentum on the grass. The American is currently playing in Eastbourne and has reached the semi-finals. Rising stars Christian Garin or Andrey Rublev will then follow. Finally, Alexander Zverev takes on former Junior world No.1 Jiri Vesely, who qualified for the main draw without dropping a set.

Elsewhere, rising star Felix-Auger Alissame has an intriguing route in what will be his first ever main draw at Wimbledon. The Canadian is the youngest player to break the world’s top 25 since Lleyton Hewitt back in 1999. Should he win his opening match, he could play back-to-back clashes against Grigor Dimitrov and Gael Monfils. Then, a last 16 showdown with top seed Djokovic could then occur.
