Juan Martin Del Potro has avoided the possibility of another surgery on his knee as he looks to return to the tour as soon as possible.
The Argentinian suffered a knee injury in Shanghai last year and has failed to play consistent tennis since as faces another test of his character.
After reaching the quarter-finals in Delray Beach in February, Del Potro decided to skip the sunshine double in order to recover from his knee injury further.
It was rumoured that he would need surgery which would’ve ruled him out for most of the season and had fans concerned about his presence.
However the former US Open champion had dismissed those reports after seeing doctors in Barcelona, “This week I had multiple tests done on my knee in Barcelona by Dr. Ángel Cotorro and after reviewing my results he advised me to continue with my current treatment,” Del Potro tweeted to his followers.
“He is satisfied with my progress and soon I will be back on court training. Thank you all for your kind messages!”
Although this is positive news for Del Potro and his fans, it looks unlikely that he will appear at Roland Garros, so Wimbledon is the most likely target for the current world number nine.
He has been practicing with Maria Sakkari as of late which is also positive news in his fight to be fit for one of the two European slams.
However it’s a delight to see that surgery is not needed for the already injury-stricken Del Potro as he looks to have a healthy end to his career.
As for the rest of the ATP Tour, the clay court season starts with ATP 250’s in Houston and Marrakech, with Alexander Zverev and Fabio Fognini receiving wildcards for the latter.
The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters is the week after with Rafael Nadal as the defending champion.
