Andy Murray is set to inspire thousands of more people next month as he has been named the official starter at the London Marathon.
The 31 year-old Brit who is currently recovering from hip re-surfacing surgery will take over from The Queen as the race starter of the London Marathon next month.
Speaking on the news Murray claimed it was an honour to be the race starter as he looks to inspire more people in the race, “It’s an honour to be asked to start the London Marathon,” Murray explained.
“It’s such an amazing race that means so much to so many people. It raises millions each year for charity and helps inspire people to get active. I have nothing but admiration for everyone who runs. I may even run it myself one day.”
It is clear why Murray has such a strong interest in the event after his wife, Kim Sears, participated in the event in 2014 and so has a strong link to the race.
Event director Hugh Brasher agreed that Murray was the perfect fit to be the race starter for the event, which starts on the 28th of April, “Andy is one of Britain’s greatest sporting superstars and it is so fitting he will be the official starter for one of the country’s greatest sporting events and the world’s greatest marathon.”
The two-time Wimbledon champion will hope to continue inspire as he looks to continue his unlikely comeback to tennis.
It looked like he was on the verge of retiring at the Australian Open this year but has recently said that he doesn’t know what his future holds.
The London Marathon starts on the 28th of April.
