Despite showing off his vintage best, Murray still remained realistic and uncertain about his future at the top level of tennis, “It’s been a really hard 18 months, a lot of ups and downs. It’s been tricky to just get back on the court competing again,” the Brit said after the match.
“So I’m happy I’m back out here again. I want to try and enjoy it as much as I can and just try and enjoy playing tennis as long as I can. I don’t know how much longer it’s going to last but we’ll see.”
The three time grand slam champion also said that he was nervous but that helped him see the ball much better against Duckworth, “I was nervous, but I like nerves. Today I felt like I saw the ball better versus, say, the middle of last year.”
It is clear that Murray is still anxious about his future but for now he can enjoy the success of competing again on the ATP tour.
The world number 256’s hip will get another test on Wednesday as he takes on fourth seed Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday evening.
Konta Gains Top 10 Win, Kyrgios Aces Past Harrison.
In other results Johanna Konta got her first top 10 win in 18 months as she defeated former US Open champion Sloane Stephens.
The former Australian Open semi-finalist beat Stephens 6-4 6-3 in an impressive win that should boost her confidence. Next for Konta will be Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Wednesday afternoon.
Defending men’s champion Nick Kyrgios was also victorious after a 7-6(5) 5-7 7-6(5) win over Ryan Harrison in a rematch from last year’s final.
The 23 year old hit 44 of the 71 aces that were hit during the match narrowly missing out on the record set by Ivo Karlovic. A nervy finish saw him escape into the second round where he will now play Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
