Serena Williams admits that she is excited for the 2019 season after last year went beyond her expectations.
The 23 grand slam champion returned to tennis in 2018 after giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, and produced some good results.
Despite lacking match fitness, Serena managed to reach two grand slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open losing to Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka.
The American overcame some controversial moments last year and managed to exceed her own expectations, “Honestly, I cannot believe the year I had,” Williams told The National.
“I have to say I always expect the best from myself, but reaching two grand slam finals back to back was beyond my expectations.”
At the age of 37, Serena shows no signs of slowing down and believes that she is excited for the 2019 season but didn’t give away her goals for next year, “It truly makes me excited for what’s ahead in 2019,” she said.
“I always have crazy big goals but I like to keep them to myself,” she said. “I think keeping them a bit of a secret helps me do the best I can.”
With the end of Serena’s career slowly approaching she would love nothing more than to win her 24th grand slam in 2019. But with the likes of Naomi Osaka, Daria Kasatkina and Aryna Sabalenka continuing to rise it will be anything but easy.
The American’s season will start with an exhibition match against Venus Williams at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi before heading to the Australian Open, which starts on the 14th of January.
