Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro has said that he has begun a ‘slow’ return back to training on the courts following an injury that ended his season early.

The world No.5 was unable to play at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals after fracturing his right patella bone during the Shanghai Masters. Taking on Borna Coric, the Argentine suffered a heavy fall that forced him to retire from the match. A MRI scan soon after confirmed the extent of his injury.

Two months on from his latest injury heartbreak, Del Potro has returned back to action on the clay courts. Conducting training sessions during the off-season. In a video uploaded to social media on Friday, the 30-year-old wrote ‘after two months, good news.’ Giving fans an update on his current fitness.

“I wanted to tell you that I’m already playing tennis two months after the fracture in the knee, I’m doing it very slowly but I’m already moving here on the court which is where I like to be.” Del Potro said.
“I wanted to tell you this news and thank you for the support you always give me. I send you a big hug.”

Earlier this month Del Potro’s agent, Jorge Viale, said doctors were ‘very pleased’ with his progress. Argentine newspaper La Nacion had previously estimated that the recovery time will be between 2-4 months. Although there has been no official word concerning how long it may take.

“Back from holidays, Delpo resumed rehab and training this week, with two daily sessions of gym and pool,” Viale wrote on Twitter.
“The doctors are very pleased with the progress of the recovery from the knee fracture suffered almost two months ago.”

This season, Del Potro has claimed two titles on the ATP Tour. Including his first at Masters 1000 level when he defeated Roger Federer at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. In August he reached a career ranking best of third in the world. Overall, Del Potro has featured in six finals in 2018 and won 47 out of 60 matches played.

Del Potro is set to return to action at the Kooyong exhibition in the lead up the Australian Open. A tournament he previously played in 2010 and 2013.
