Jo-Wilfred Tsonga has announced that Spanish Davis Cup captain Sergi Bruguera will be apart of his team for the 2019 season.
The Frenchman spent most of the 2018 season on the sidelines with injury having only played 12 matches last season. However to help him overcome this issue he has appointed Spanish Davis Cup captain Sergi Bruguera as apart of his team.
Unlike Tsonga, the Spaniard had a fairly successful 2018 having lead Spain to their first Davis Cup semi-final in six years before losing to France in Lille. The former Roland Garros champion will look to pass his knowledge and experience onto the 33 year old, who has limited years left on the tour.
This is what Tsonga said about the announcement on Twitter, “I’m happy to announce that Sergi Bruguera will be part of my team in 2019! I’m very excited to start working together and to take up new challenges.”
The move make sense considering that Bruguera won’t be captaining Spain in the Davis Cup until November’s Davis Cup Finals in Madrid under the new 18 team format.
As for Tsonga he will look to replicate the season he had in 2017 where he won three titles and made decent grand slam runs. The now world number 259 will have third round points to defend at the Australian Open this year after losing to Nick Kyrgios in 2018.
Tsonga will start his 2019 season in a packed Brisbane field which includes Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov. The tournament begins on the 31st of December.
