Australia’s Ash Barty has won her third WTA title after defeating China’s Qiang Wang 6-3, 6-4, in the final of the Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.

Barty, who has dropped only one set in the round-robin tournament this week, broke down her opponents rhythm with the use of her slice. Barty’s ability to mix up the pace during rallies triggered an array of unforced errors from Wang, who was the first Chinese player to contest the final of the tournament. The 22-year-old produced two aces and broke her opponent five times during the match. Overall, she produced 22 winners to 27 unforced errors.

“It’s been a great finish for me in China this week.” Barty said during the trophy ceremony.
“It’s been a phenomenal year. I’m very excited that we’re finished now.  Time for some vocation and some relax time before we (Barty’s team) gear up for the Australian summer.” She added.

At the start of the match, it was a dream start for the Australian No.1 as she grabbed a double break to race out to a 4-0 lead. Despite Barty’s speedy start, Wang eventually managed to find her footing to narrow the margin to 4-3. Illustrating the type of tennis that has gotten her four wins over top 10 players this season. Despite both players engaging in some lengthy baseline rallies, it was Barty that was the more consistent. Breaking once again for a 5-3 lead with the help of a perfectly placed drop shot, before claiming the opening set with a overhead volley.

Following a roller coaster opener, came a more even second set between the two players with break point opportunities coming and going. Once against it was Barty who prevailed. A Wang shank from the forehand side resulted in the world No.19 breaking once more to surge ahead to 4-3.  Closing in on her second WTA Trophy of the season, Barty secured victory on her first match point with the help of an overhead backhand volley.

“You’re a great chick. We always have battles on the court.” Barty said in tribute to runner-up Wang.
“You’ve had a phenomenal season. I know that I spoiled the party a little bit today in front of the Chinese fans, but you have some great success this year and I wish all the success for the future.”

Barty has now won 10 consecutive matches against Chinese players on the tour. Following her triumph in the final WTA tournament in 2018, she will end the season ranked 15th in the world. Her best ever year-end position. Meanwhile, Wang will also feature in the top 20. Becoming the first player from China to end a year in that group since Li Na back in 2014.
