Novak Djokovic is world number two again after easing past Alexander Zverev 6-2 6-1 to reach the Shanghai final.

The Serb broke four times as he just dropped three games on his way to thrashing Zverev in an hour as he became the new world number two.

A win in tomorrow’s final against either Roger Federer or Borna Coric would mean that he would be just 215 points behind world number one, Rafael Nadal.

Today’s semi-final was also Djokovic’s 1000th match of his career, having won 827 matches on the ATP World Tour and lost 173.

After the match Djokovic acknowledged his extraordinary achievement, “Being No. 2 after this tournament is also a great achievement, considering the first four or five months of the year and considering I had the surgery. Where I was about four months ago and where I am today is quite an extreme opposite. I’m just cherishing that achievement and every moment spent on the court,” said Djokovic.

As for the German he became very frustrated and angry with himself as he just didn’t turn up today as he played some of the worst tennis of the week.

However the 21 year old can still call Shanghai a successful tournament having reached another masters 1000 semi-final and also booked his place at the ATP World Tour finals in London.

“I qualified for London, which is positive. There are still positive things. I have been in the semi-finals of a Masters [1000 event] once again. This is my fifth [semi-final] this year out of eight, and there is one more still to come,” said Zverev

The Madrid champion joins Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro in November’s showpiece event with three spots still left.

However it is the Serbian who is into the final having yet to be broken in his 37 service games and will look for his fourth title of the season in tomorrow’s final.
