Lukas Rosol beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-3 4-6 6-4 to book his spot in the second round, where he will face Karen Khachanov.
Rosol drew the first blood by breaking serve in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead en route to winning the first set 6-3. Berrettini broke serve in the 10th game to win the second set 6-4 forcing the match to the third set.
Both players held their serve in the first six games. Rosol got the crucial break in the seventh game, after Berrettini made three unforced errors. Berrettini missed all his five break point chances, including three in the decisive tenth game of the third set, when Rosol was serving for the match.
Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene fended off eight of the ten break point chances he faced in his 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7-2) win over Laslo Djere from Serbia. Djere saved two break points in the seventh game of the first set and converted the third set point on return at 6-5 to seal the first set. Bedene bounced back by breaking serve in the fifth game of the second set. Djere broke back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Bedene broke serve at 15 in the ninth game and closed out the second set on the third set point after saving three set points.
Djere fended off three break points in the seventh game of the decisive set, but he did not convert a break point for 5-3. Bedene reeled off four consecutive points on return to win the tie-break 7-2 to set up a second round match against either Ricardas Berankis or Denis Istomin.
Adrian Mannarino came back from one set down to battle past Russian wild card Evgeny Karlovsky 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) at the VTB Kremlin Cup in Moscow setting up a second round match against number 1 seed and this year’s Roland Garros champion Marco Cecchinato. The Frenchman converted just one of his 12 break point chances.
