Top seed and world number 9 Julia Goerges beat former world number 7 Belinda Bencic 6-4 7-5 to claim her second title of the season at the Luxembourg Open.
The German player has clinched a title in the penultimate WTA tournament of the season for the second year in a row. Last season she won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and went on to claim the WTA Elite Trophy title a couple of weeks later.
Goerges never dropped her serve and broke in the early stages of the opening set and in a marathon 11th game of the second set. She got her only break of the first set in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. She dropped only five points on serve in the opening set.
Bencic fended off the only break point of the second set until the 11th game. The young Swiss player saved two more chances in the 11th game, but Goerges converted her third chance to take a 6-5 lead. The German served out the match at 15 with a forehand winner in the 12th game to claim her second title of the title after lifting her trophy in Auckland. Goerges has improved her win-loss record in the head-to-head matches against Belinda Bencic.
Goerges has lifted her sixth career title after losing to Kiki Bertens in the Charleston final.
“Belinda has had a great week and a great effort this week, coming through qualifying to make the final. She has been in the top 10 and I know how tough it is to get there. This tournament is so special for me because it was my first tournament in the main draw when I was 15”,said Goerges in the post-match interview.
