This year’s US Open has got underway with a shock loss for top seed Simona Halep.
The world No.1 crashed out in straight sets to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. A two-time quarter-finalist in New York. Halep is the first top seed to exit the opening round of the New York tournament in the Open Era. In total three seeded players crashes out of the tournament on Monday. Joining Halep on the casualty list was Anastascia Pavlychenkova (27) and Magdaléna Rybáriková (31).
In the men’s section, Stan Wawrinka made a winning return to the tournament after missing last year due to injury. The Swiss player appeared to be hindered by some sort of physical issue, but still manage to dismiss eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. There was also good news for Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal. All three players also progressed to the second round.
