Kyle Edmund beat Leonardo Mayer 6-3 6-3 in 72 minutes at the Wake Forest University Tennis Complex in Winston Salem. The British player, who reached the Australian Open semifinals, won 93 % of his first service points and never faced a break point. He converted three of his five break points. Mayer dropped his serve twice in the opening set, before being broken in his first service game of the second set.

Edmund broke serve in the third game with a forehand winner and held serve at love in the next game to open up a 3-1 lead. Both players went on serve until the ninth game when Edmund broke serve after Mayer wasted two game points. Edmund sealed the first set after 34 minutes, when Mayer netted a forehand.

After a rain delay of one hour and a half Edmund got a break in the second game of the second set, when Mayer made a forehand error. The Briton opened up a 3-0 and earned a match point on his return at 5-2. Mayer fended it off with a forehand winner, but Edmund hit three service winners in the ninth game to reach the round of 16, where he will face Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, who saved four of the five break points he faced to cruise past his compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-1 6-3.

Spain’s Jaume Munar beat Russia’s Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-2 in one hour in match between two players born in 1997. Munar dropped 15 points in 9 service games and saved the only break point he faced. He converted three of his break points. Rublev won just 37 % of his first serve points and made seven double faults.

The first set went on serve until the eighth game, when Munar got the break after Rublev wasted four game points. The Spaniard wrapped up the set with a hold at love in the ninth game.

Munar fended off a break point at the start of the second set. Rublev served at 10 % and was broken in the third and seventh games. Munar closed out the match with a hold at 15 in the eighth game.

Steve Johnson fended off the only break point he faced to beat US Tommy Paul 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.
