Canadian 19-year-old rising star Denis Shapovalov beat Kyle Edmund 6-4 7-5 in one hour and 53 minutes to advance to the third round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Edmund saved five break points in the first set but failed to convert any of his break point opportunities and was broken in the final game of the opening set.
Shapovalov got an early break in the first game of the second set to open up a 4-0 lead. Edmund broke back twice to draw level to 4-4 and saved a match point at 5-5.
Shapovalov finally broke Edmund on his fourth match point with a backhand volley to secure his spot in the third round where he will face either Milos Raonic or Malek Jaziri. Raonic beat Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic 6-3 6-3 in the first round. Shapovalov beat Raonic in the the third round of the Madrid Mutua Open last May.
Misha Zverev beat Damir Dzumhur 6-3 6-4 to set up a second round match against Cincinnati defending champion Grigor Dimitrov.
