Bob Bryan faces a six month absence from the ATP World Tour after receiving hip surgery in New York this week.
The 40 year old injured his hip in the Madrid final and hasn’t recovered since, leading his brother Mike Bryan to team up with different partners. After months of speculation, Mike Bryan has revealed that his brother will miss the rest of the season as he looks to recover from hip surgery, “He’s going to have surgery unfortunately,” Mike told ‘DownTheTee’. “He’s having it this week up in New York [with a doctor] who’s one of the best in the world for the hip. It looks like it might be a six-month recovery. He’s hoping to come back a little after the Aussie Open next year. It looks like it will get back to one-hundred percent; so that’s good news.”
Mike Bryan was speaking at the Citi Open in Washington, where he is teaming up with Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The American recently won his 17th grand slam title with Jack Sock and became the individual world number one. The latest setback for Bob means the Mike can extend his own grand slam tally as he will play two more slams without his brother.
The world number one also committed himself to Tennis for the long term future, “I want to stay in tennis, definitely. It’s given us so much and that’s what we love doing. Whether it would be doing some TV stuff or some coaching or whatever … hanging out with my dad or being tournament director. I don’t know. We’ll have to kind of dabble and see what sticks. I’d love to do something with my brother, stay together as a family.”
