Julia Goerges Ousts Bertens To Set Serena Semi-Final At Wimbledon
Julia Goerges is into her first Wmbledon semi-final after a three set win over good friend Kiki Bertens.
Julia Goerges ousted Kiki Bertens 3-6 7-5 6-1 in a tough three set battle to set up a semi-final meeting with Serena Williams on Thursday.
The first set saw both players dominate through their serve as they looked to book their place into their first ever Wimbledon semi-final. The world number 20, Bertens had used her smart serving throughout the tournament including in her wins over Venus Williams and Karolina Pliskova, and once again used that to her advantage against the German.
The 13th seed failed to use the big serve on the key moments which cost her against a strong returner such as Bertens as the Dutchwoman gained the advantage for a 5-3 lead in the opening set. The German’s movement was quite static in the opening set and Bertens made her pay for it as the 20th seed wrapped up the opening set in 39 minutes.
The German needed to step up her game in the second set especially when taking her forehand earlier and she did just that as she raced to a convincing 4-1 lead. A frustrated Bertens was starting to question her serve as well as shot selection as the tension started to rise in this high stakes match. The Dutchwoman seemed to have been motivated to improve and finish this in two sets as she broke straight back to level the set at 4-4.
Despite Bertens’ good all round play, the German was determined to not let this opportunity slip as she broke once more to level the match up at one set all as momentum was with Goerges. The world number 13 had got her rhythm back on serve as the powerful backswing of the German dominated proceedings. The end was near for Bertens as as Goerges won the last five games to seal one of the best wins of her career against her good friend.
It was an amazing week for the Dutchwoman beating two top 10 seeds on her way to the quarter-finals as she has made some progress on the grass courts. However it is Goerges who will compete on Thursday for a place in her first grand slam final as she takes on 23 time grand slam champion, Serena Williams.
