John Isner feels he is mentally fresh as he heads into the second week of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
The ninth seeded American has a game made for grass and for the first time in his career there is actually evidence to prove this as he reaches the last 16 at SW19 for the first time in his career. The 33 year old didn’t have his own way in the second round as he edged past Ruben Bemelmans in five sets however his other two victories were both relatively easy.
The Miami Open champion now feels he is mentally fresh heading into the second week of Wimbledon, “I think the most important thing I do is keep taking care of my body and make sure I’m physically fresh, more importantly mentally fresh,” Isner explained. “I was pretty confident coming into this tournament because I have been playing well since Miami. All of that combined has made me — it’s made for a good start here.”
The American has also expressed his delight at how conditions are playing at Wimbledon although has dismissed claims that it only helps the big servers, “I do feel like the ball is getting up a little bit higher. Someone like Nadal definitely likes that, as well,” the world number 10 explained. “He seems to be playing pretty well. You should see him in practice. It’s absurd how hard he hits it. He’s in a good spot, but for me I like my serve in any conditions, but these conditions are very, very good for it.”
The 6ft 10inch giant feels confident ahead of the second week and so he should be, with the conditions continuing the way they are he can cause anybody trouble. Also he is the highest seeded player in his section until the semi-finals, which is a massive opportunity for him to make a statement at SW19.
The American will now have two days off before facing exciting Greek prospect and 31st seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round on Monday.
