Camila Giorgi: “I am more focused on my game”
World number 52 Camila Giorgi lost to Serena Williams 3-6 6-3 6-4 in three sets in the quarter final at Wimbledon, but the 26-year-old Italian player reached a career milestone by advancing to the quarter finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career thanks to her 6-3 6-4 win over Ekaterina Makarova.
“I played very consistently against Makarova. I played all the points very well. I made some mistakes, but I played my game. I am not surprised that it has taken me so long to reach the quarter finals at Grand Slam. I had many injuries in the past. This year I have more continuitity. I played some very good matches here. This year I worked on improving my serve. I think it’s one of my best shots. I do more double mistakes because I push harder, so it gets more mistakes. It’s my game to play more aggressive and do more mistakes, but I will not change that”, said Giorgi.
Giorgi was asked after her match against Makarova what she thought about her quarter final opponent Serena Williams.
“I think I am more focused on my game. I am playing a very good tennis, so I think on myself and that’s all. I don’t follow tennis, women’s tennis”.
Before Wimbledon had reached the fourth round at Wimbledon 2012 and at the 2013 US Open as her best result at Grand Slam level. She won her maiden WTA title in Rosmalen, reached her second consecutive final in Katowice in 2016 and beat eight top 10 players.
“Five years ago I was less experienced. I was a little girl. It’s completely different. Now I have many matches. I am playing better, because I have more years of experience.”
“Against Williams I was focused on my game. I could have been more consistent during the second set. I could not ask more from my serve. I am disappointed, but I am also happy to have reached the quarter final. I showed that I was able to win four matches in a row. I played all hard-court tournaments from Washington until the US Open including the Canadian Open and Cincinnati. I want to continue improving to be seeded in New York”, said Giorgi.
