There was delight for the Italian fans at the French Open on Sunday when underdog Marco Cecchinato knocked out eighth seed David Goffin.

The world No.72 had previously never won a grand slam match prior to this year, but now finds himself in the last eight of the French Open. Becoming only the third Italian man to achieve the milestone within the last 38 years. His opponent next will be a Novak Djokovic. Who continues to gain in momentum on the tour with a straight sets win over Fernando Verdasco.

It was also a day to remember for Alexander Zverev, who reached his first grand slam quarter-final at the age of 21. Fighting back from two sets down to defeat Karen Khachanov. Zverev will next take on Dominic Thiem in what will be their seventh meeting on the tour.

In the women’s draw, the was double success for America with Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens progressing to the last eight. Keys required only 66 minutes to knock out 31st seed Mihaela Buzărnescu. Booking a showdown with Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. Meanwhile, US Open champion Stephens thrashed Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-0. Both players have now reached the quarter-final of every grand slam tournament at least once.
