Nick Kyrgios is remaining focused and humble as he prepares to make a deep run at Wimbledon this year.
The former quarter-finalist is looking ahead to his first round match with Denis Istomin on Monday as he looks to make a major impression at his best grand slam. However the Australian is remaining focused and claims that he hasn’t looked at the rest of his draw, “I’m just gonna try and get through my first round, that’s where all my focus is at the moment,” explained Kyrgios. “I didn’t look throughout the draw who my seeds are, anything like that. I’m just focused on my first opponent.”
The 15th seed has a 2-0 head to head record against his Uzbekistani opponent but has not played him in three years as he looks to start his Wimbledon campaign positively. The world number 19 has also remained cautious regarding his physical health and admits his grand slam record isn’t the best, “Putting it together over two weeks isn’t something I’ve done before,” he said. “It’s not something many people have done – there’s always the select few who can do it and hopefully, you never know, in two weeks’ time it could be my breakthrough. But I’m going to take it one day at a time, I’m not going to think ahead, I’m going to do all the right things every day.”
The Australian is set to face Alexander Zverev in the fourth round, should both players make it past the first week. The German plays Kyrgios’ compatriot James Duckworth in the first round on Tuesday.
