World number 13, Madison Keys completed her grand slam quarter-final sweep after powering past Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 6-4.
The American brought her hard-hitting game style to Chatrier from the very start as she stormed out to a 3-0 lead. The Romanian, who had shocked the tournament favourite Elina Svitolina in the last round, couldn’t find her rhythm in what was her first last 16 appearance at a grand slam.
The 13th seed’s big serve was also causing Buzarnescu problems as she used it to good affect especially when constructing a perfect combination of shots. The American secured the second break in the sixth game and held to seal the opening set in 23 minutes.
The US Open finalist continued her momentum in the second set as some big forehands secured an early double break for a 4-1 lead. The world number 33 couldn’t use her unique game style to cause the American any sorts of problems as it seemed that Keys was heading towards a convincing victory.
However the Romanian restored a bit of hope as Keys had become tight and nervy as 5-1 became 5-4, with Buzarnescu saving two match points. However Keys had learned her lesson as she took her third match point to secure victory and her first Roland Garros quarter-final.
It was a great effort by Buzarnescu who did well to knock out Svitolina in her previous match, who was arguably the tournament favourite and it has been an incredible rise from the Romanian. However the American was too powerful and good today as she has now reached the quarter-finals of all four grand slams, which is an incredible achievement. The world number 13 will now play either Barbora Strycova or Yulia Putintseva in the quarter-finals, which will be a match that Keys will be favourite for.
