Garbine Muguruza has remained cautious and alert as she looks forward to a quarter-final clash with Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros.
The 2016 champion advanced to the last eight after Lesia Tsurenko retired with a left hamstring injury after two games. The win means she will face Maria Sharapova in the last eight on Wednesday after the Russian benefited from Serena Williams’ withdrawal.
After her abrupt contest, Garbine Muguruza remained cautious about her quarter-final match with Sharapova, “She’s played very good matches. I haven’t played against her for a while. She’s in quarterfinals, and I’m really looking forward to playing her,” Muguruza explained. “Favourite? Not really. Because I think it’s a match that is going to be very interesting. The quarterfinals are going to be very good. I saw her match against Pliskova the other day, and she played extraordinarily good. I’m just going to play her, and that’s it.”
The Spaniard also outlined where the key battle will be won and lost in Wednesday’s big clash, ” She’s very solid and aggressive. I’m going to try and play my best tennis, and I think that we both have the same type of aggressive game. So what I have to do is be on top of things and start first.”
The duo have played three times, with Sharapova winning on all three occasions however they haven’t played since 2014 and since then Muguruza has become a two time grand slam champion as well as world number one.
