Former world No.1 Andy Murray has returned back to the practice courts with the goal of being fit in time for the grass season, according to his mother Judy.

The former British Fed Cup captain gave an update about her son on Monday during an interview with BBC Sport. Murray hasn’t played a competitive match since last year’s Wimbledon Championships due to a hip injury. Twice he tried to stage a comeback to the tour, but was unsuccessful. In January he took the decision to undergo surgery to help repair his hip.

“He’s doing the rehabilitation. He’s been back on the court in the last couple of days,” Judy told BBC Sport.
“His goal was always to try and be ready for the grass-court season and that is still his goal, so fingers crossed.”

It is unclear as to if Murray is on course to start his planned return to action. He is on the entry list for the Libema Open in Rosmalen. An ATP 250 event that will start on Monday. In recent times numerous media reports have surfaced suggesting that Murray’s recovery isn’t going as smoothly as hoped. Although it has been hard to establish the truth due to the low-profile the three-time grand slam champion is keeping.

“Any player who has been out injured, it takes you a bit of time to get back to top form,” explained Judy.
“When he had his back surgery in 2013 he was back playing within three months, but it took him the best part of a year to get back to his top form.
“You need matches to build up your match fitness. You are not going to come back and start where you left off.”

It is expected that Murray will break his silence this week and speak out about his plans for the grass. Should he want a full schedule, he could play tournaments in Rosmalen and Queen’s prior to Wimbledon. A tournament he hasn’t missed since 2013.

Murray is currently ranked 45th in the world. He has won 45 ATP titles so far in his career and has earned $60,807,644 in prize money.
