23 time grand slam champion, Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week’s tournament in Rome as she aims to be fit in time for Roland Garros.
The 36 year old has been recently promoting her new documentary ‘Being Serena’ on HBO as she deals with new commercial responsibilities. However as far as tennis is concerned, it will be another few weeks before we see her on court as she has pulled out of next week’s tournament in Rome.
The American has only played three singles matches all season and it is clear that she wants to regain her full fitness before returning to the tour. Serena was seen practicing at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy for the past few weeks as she looks to adapt to the clay court. So the intention to play at Roland Garros seems clear however it does mean she will not play any competitive matches heading into the second grand slam of the year, unless she takes a wildcard into Nurnberg or Strasbourg.
So next week’s tournament in Italy will be without Serena however it will still contain some of tennis’s top names including Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Caroline Wozniacki. The tournament starts on the 13th of May.
