World number one Rafael Nadal stormed to his 81st Roland Garros victory after a 6-2 6-1 6-1 thrashing of Guido Pella.
The Argentinian began the match with some aggressive backhands and high intensity as he looked to grab an early break of serve. However that was the only part of the match that the ten time was troubled as he began his destruction of the world number 78. The Spaniard’s backhand was proving too much for Pella as he sealed two breaks of serve and after 54 minutes won the first set. It was a long opening set as Pella played some outstanding tennis but only walked to his chair with two games to show for it.
Unfortunately for the Argentinian the second set was no different as Nadal’s brutal shots cut through Pella with devastating effect. However it wasn’t only the backhands and the forehands that were impressive for Nadal, it was also the finesse that the ten time champion showed as he continued to trouble his opponent. Only one game was dropped as Nadal cruised to a 6-1 set.
The third set was no different as the Spaniard cruised to six games in a row once again showing why he is the best player of all time on this surface. The top seed completed victory in just over two hours to secure an easy 81st Roland Garros as he moves into the third round.
Rafael Nadal will now move into the last 32 to play 27th seed Richard Gasquet after he started and finished impressively to overcome Malek Jaziri. The Frenchman has yet to win in the 15 meetings against the ten time Roland Garros champion.
There were also comfortable straight sets victories for Diego Schwartzman and Albert Ramos-Vinolas while 24th seed Denis Shapovalov exited the tournament with a four set loss to Maximillian Marterer.
