Taylor Fritz Snaps Six Match Quarter-Final Streak As Johnson Test Looms
Taylor Fritz broke his Quarter-Final losing streak in Houston against Jack Sock.
Taylor Fritz ended his six match Quarter-Final losing streak as he defeated Jack Sock to set up a Houston Semi-Final with Steve Johnson.
The 20 year old has had an amazing start to the season after winning 23 matches this season at Challengers and on the main tour combined. The world number 72 made 14 aces as he defeated 3rd seed Jack Sock 6-3 3-6 6-4 in 2 hours and 22 minutes. After the match Fritz was delighted at his hard fought victory, “I felt like it could really go either way. I just had to get back in it. I just stayed with it and was able to come up [good] on the points that mattered.”
It was a very good win for Fritz in what has been an exceptional season for the 20 year old as he looks to make his breakthrough this season. As for Sock, his poor singles season continues as he is yet to win back to back matches in singles competition after four months of the season. The American needs to start implementing his doubles form onto the singles court otherwise a fall down the world rankings could soon follow.
However a big win for Fritz means he will now face fellow American Steve Johnson in the Semi-Finals after he defeated Miami Open champion John Isner 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(5) in 2 hours and 36 minutes. The world number 51 managed to survive 28 aces from the Isner side of the net to edge past the tall American as he secured his 12th win of the season.
The other Semi-Final will be contested between Tennys Sandgren and Ivo Karlovic after they respectively beat Guido Pella and Nick Kyrgios respectively. The Houston Semi-Finals begin at 1pm local time.
