Rafael Nadal has said that he is excited about the upcoming Davis Cup Quarter-Final with Germany in Valencia and has also explained how difficult the start of 2018 has been for him.
The newly crowned World number one was speaking to the local media ahead of Spain’s tricky tie with Germany and the Spaniard is excited about this weekend’s unique location, “I like the court of the Plaza de Toros in Valencia. We have already played in in bull rings in Madrid, Alicante and Cordoba with positive results.” However the 16 time grand slam champion has said that he is unsure if he will play on Friday, “What I do not know is if I’ll play on Friday, let’s see how the week goes. I am very excited and I hope to respond well physically because it has been complicated for five months now.”
Nadal, who has a 22-1 record in Davis Cup singles has also said that he regrets playing the Australian Open in January, “I would have changed to play a grand slam less for having suffered less pain. I think that throughout my career I have missed more tournaments than my rivals. I cried in Acapulco and in Australia…. they are complicated moments, these injuries are the reality of an athlete.”
The Spaniard will look to put the first few months of frustration and emotion behind him as he looks to lead Spain to Davis Cup victory this weekend. If Nadal doesn’t play on Friday, his first singles match back since the Australian Open could be against world number five Alexander Zverev on Sunday.
