Garbine Muguruza has reached her third WTA Semi-Final of the season in Monterrey after she thrashed eighth seed Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3 6-0.
Despite getting broken in the first game, the world number three was in complete control of the match as she broke twice in the opening set. The Spaniard dominated proceedings as she dictated play and after 36 minutes closed out the first set 6-3.
Tomljanovic, didn’t have any weapons that could threaten Muguruza throughout the contest and the huge ranking difference was telling in the second set. The world number 96 only won five points in the second set as the current Wimbledon champion continued her dominant performance. After breaking three times, Muguruza held to love to complete victory in 59 minutes and book her place in the last four in Monterrey.
After the contest Muguruza recognised her stunning performance and has recognised her improvement with each match, “I think I am improving here in Monterrey, I made some good decisions today, some were okay, some were worse, but I always think I can play better.”
The top seed will now play world number 90 Ana Bogdan after she overcame the in-form Danielle Collins 6-2 6-4 to reach the Semi-Finals. The Romanian converted three of her four break point opportunities to reach her first Semi-Final since Bucharest in July last year.
The other Semi-Final will be Timea Babos taking on Sachia Vickery after they posted comfortable victories over Monica Puig and Magdalena Rybarikova respectively. Babos and Vickery will meet for the second time in four years in Monterrey after the Hungarian won their last meeting in 2015 with the loss of four games.
