World number three, Garbine Muguruza has called for equality in Tennis in a recent interview as she says the words ‘fighter’ and ‘feminine’ can go together.

The current Wimbledon champion was speaking to the Guardian about her off the court antics, like attending the Oscars in March, and has insisted that more equality needs to be shown in tennis, “It’s a delicate thing because for some people it’s very hard to allow an athlete to be feminine,” explained the Spaniard.

“For me it’s easy. I want to fight on court but I also want to wear something I like. You can be angry and competitive and a fighter and you can also be nice and wear something by Stella McCartney. I feel good in that and it’s important for your esteem because you’ve got to be resilient. I’m a tennis player, and that’s my priority. I like fashion but I would never want to be a model. I don’t want to forget what I’m good at because, as soon as you do, you’re screwed.”

The two time grand slam champion has also claimed that it’s not only equal attitudes that is wrong with tennis but the prize money is still a big issue, “I speak to other athletes and they don’t have the impact, the money and equality we have. It’s getting better and better in tennis and hopefully it can soon be completely equal in all tournaments. But in other sports it’s not like that.”

Muguruza’s comments come after she appeared in Vogue Spain last week, where she then received lots of criticism from fans on social media. The former world number one will now play the Mutua Madrid Open, which starts on Sunday the 6th of May.
