Set to play her first WTA match for 13 months, Serena Williams is hoping to use her comeback as a platform to help others.

On Thursday the former world No.1 will take on Zarina Diyas in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. It will be Williams’ first singles match on the WTA Tour since winning the 2017 Australian Open. Since then, she has welcomed the arrival of her first child, got married and was bed-bound for six weeks following complications after giving birth.

It has been a far from simple journey over the past 12 months, but she remains undeterred from returning back to the sport. Coincidentally, her return occurs on March 8th, which is also International Women’s Day. A topic close to the heart of the 23-time grand slam champion. In a recent article Williams wrote about the lack of medical support available to some women around the world. Pointing out that black women are three times more likely to die giving birth than white women in America.

“Thursday, the day I play my very first match, marks International Women’s Day. My comeback could not have come on a better day and I decided I wanted to do something different let you all be a part of my long journey back.” She wrote on Instagram.

During her first match, the 36-year-old will be wearing a pin badge in the shape of an S. It has been created the help raise funds for the Yetunde Price Resource center. A community Centre created by the Williams sisters to support those affected by violence. It is named after Williams’ half-sister, who was a victim of a drive-by-shooting in 2003.

“I created my Serena Gold toned “S” pin.” Williams explained. “When I am playing you (her fans) can wear it and show support not only from me but also for my charity which supports the Yetunde Price Resource center.”

The badges are currently only available at tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. As part of the idea, Williams has asked those who have one to identify with the S in a personal level. For her, she says it represents sureness and strength.

This week will be the first true test of Williams’ current fitness. Leading up to Indian Wells, she has featured in two exhibition events (Abu Dubai and New York) and partnered sister Venus in the doubles for the Fed Cup.

It’s official. My comeback is here. This Thursday I will start playing tennis again professionally for the first time since giving birth to my daughter. This whole month I am playing tournaments in California and Florida- both my home states. Thursday, the day I play my very first match, marks international women’s day. My comeback could not have come on a better day and I decided I wanted to do something different let you all be apart of my long journey back (if you want of course!!) So I created my Serena Gold toned “S” pin. When I am playing you can wear it and show support not only from me but also for my charity which supports the Yetunde Price Resource center. I want this gold “S” mean something special to you personally. What is one S word in your life that means something to you? Mine is Strong and Sure! So when I wear my “S” pin I am representing Strength, and Sureness. What would your “S” mean? They are for now only available for my fans that come see my at Indian wells, and Miami starting Wednesday as well as Thursday when I play!! Sooooo if you are watching me stop by the Serena booth to grab a “S” pin. Post pics of you wearing your “S” and tag me! Thanks for the support I look forward to seeing you out there!!
