Novak Djokovic has distanced himself from claims that he was a key figure in plans to change the Davis Cup to a week-long event once a year.

Earlier this week the ITF announced plans to transform the competition with the prospect of home and away ties being removed. Prompting outrage from some tennis federations. The proposal has been backed by investment company Kosmos, which is owned by footballer Gerard Pique. Kosmos has pledged to support the event over 25 years with a $3 billion investment.

“This is fantastic news! We all want to play for our country, but I have been saying for years that the current format does not work,” Djokovic told Le Parisien.
“The proof, the best players are increasingly rare to participate regularly. I did it for years, I went after reaching the final rounds in Grand Slam. Each time you tell yourself that it is not reasonable.
“Changing the format of the Davis Cup is a decision that many have been waiting for.”

In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, the former world No.1 was named as an instrumental figure in the proposal. Djokovic has previously criticised the Davis Cup format and has spoken in favour of introducing a structure similar to that of the world cup in football. He is also reported to be one of the players Pique has previously discussed his plans with alongside Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal. Spanish media outlet AS claims that the two has held meetings ‘several times.’

Despite the key backing of Djokovic, who guided Serbia to the Davis Cup title in 2010, he insists that he isn’t part of the plan.

“Perhaps because I have been in frequent contact with Piqué, a friend, and because I am the chairman of the board of players (player council).” He explains when asked when some has ties him to the proposal.
“I was involved in these discussions. But that’s all: I have no interest in this matter, I do not benefit from it.”

The divide

Before the World Cup of tennis comes to life, it needs to be approved at the ITF AGM meeting this year. It is a topic that has divided many tennis federations. Belgium has confirmed that they will vote against the plans along with France. Meanwhile, the president of the Swiss Tennis Federation has publicly backed the motion.

“Tennis can be very conservative, and I know some countries are reluctant to make any changes.” Admits Djokovic.
“The Davis Cup is a historic event, has deep roots that we respect but it needs to innovate, improve. It is feared that a change threatens the integrity of tennis that resists any progress.
“In other sports such as golf, football or basketball, there are successes that could be used.
“I respect all those who have left a legacy in our sport, but others are progressing and we need to get started, seize opportunities. It takes openness and out of shackles.”

According to Djokovic, players will meet in Indian Wells to discuss the future of the team event. Should it get passed at the AGM meeting in August, the first competition could be held in 2019.
