The Miami Open wildcards have been announced as Marion Bartoli’s return to tennis has been delayed.
Bartoli, who was supposed to return to a WTA tournament for the first time since 2013 in Miami, has delayed her return after she didn’t appear among the wildcards. The 33 year old did compete at the tie-break tens event in New York, a couple of weeks ago where she lost to Serena Williams. The 2013 Wimbledon Champion will now return in Monterrey, which is in the first week after the Miami Open.
However a couple of familiar names were among the wildcards, including the 23 grand slam champion Serena Williams, who made her comeback last week in Indian Wells, where she lost to her sister Venus Williams in the third round. Also the likes of Victoria Azarenka and the returning Bethanie Mattek-Sands have wildcards into the main draw of the Women’s event.
In the men’s event several next gen stars have been given wildcards including Miomir Kecmanovic, Nicola Kuhn and Nicolas Jarry. There are also qualifying wildcards for Joao Souza and Casper Ruud.
As well as Bartoli missing out on the main draw, Eugenie Bouchard has missed out on a main draw wildcard. The Florida resident will have to go through qualifying if she wants to compete in the main draw, recently the struggling Canadian had just lost most of her sponsorships.
