Gael Monfils and Phillip Kohlschreiber have pulled out of the Miami Open, which starts on Wednesday. The Frenchman will miss the Miami tournament for the second consecutive year. He was losing 6-2 3-1 when he was forced to retire from his third round match against his compatriot Pierre Hugues Herbert due to a back injury.
Monfils made his debut in Miami in 2005 and reached the quarter finals in 2016. He will now focus on the European clay season. This year he made his come-back from injury with a title in Doha last January.
Kohlschreiber has also withdrawn from Miami after losing against eventual champion Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter finals. The 34-year-old German veteran player made his first appearance in Miami in 2005 but has never advanced to the third round at Key Biscayne.
This year’s Sao Paulo finalist Nicolas Jarry and Lukas Lacko will receive a spot in the main draw.
