World number six Dominic Thiem has been ruled out for 3-4 weeks after suffering an ankle injury during his third round match with Pablo Cuevas.

The Austrian completed an MRI test on Tuesday morning and the results were negative as he has suffered a hairline crack in his ankle. It means that Thiem will now miss the Miami Open next week and has had to withdraw from Austria’s Zone Group I tie with Russia in April.

This is a big blow for Thiem considering he didn’t have many points to defend in Miami after he went out in the second round in 2017. The Austrian had the following to say about the news, “I cannot perform. I hoped to play in Miami after all but this topic is off the table.”

The Vienna tournament director, Herwig Straka,  also expressed his disappointment in Thiem’s injury, “Hopefully Domi comes back stronger. Three to four weeks out during the season is a horror.”

The 24 year old is even a doubt for the start of the clay court season, which is due to start in Monte-Carlo on the 15th of April. He now travels back from the United States to try and rehabilitate his injury.
