20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer could return back to world No.1 by the end of next week after being given a wildcard into the Rotterdam Open.

The 36-year-old, who hasn’t played on the tour since defending his title at the Australian Open, confirmed his intention to play on Wednesday. Federer has been able to enter the tournament via the A + wildcard rule. Allowing a select group of players to make last minute entry into tournaments.

“The tournament is special for me. I remember playing for the first time in 1999 as it was one of the first events where I got the chance to play at the highest level.” Said Federer.
“It feels good to join in the celebrations of the 45th edition.”

Trailing Rafael Nadal by 145 points in the race to the top of the ATP Emirates rankings, a run to the semifinals in Rotterdam will be enough for the Swiss player to return to world No.1. A position he hasn’t held since November 2012. Should he achieve the goal, Federer would become the oldest No.1 player of all time. Surpassing Andre Agassi’s record of 33 years and 131 days set in 2003. He has already spent a record 302 week’s at the top position.

“We are thrilled that Roger has chosen to come to the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament last minute. After his fantastic result at the Australian Open, it is tremendous news that he will be joining us in Rotterdam. It is a crown to the celebration of the history of our tournament.” Tournament director Richard Krajicek said about Federer’s appearance.

The world No.2 has won the Rotterdam title twice in his career. Defeating Ivan Ljubicic in the 2005 final and Juan Martin del Potro in 2012. This year will be his ninth appearance at the tournament. Federer currently boasts a win-loss record of 23-6.

Following confirmation of Federer’s participation, the ATP 500 event is set to have four top 10 players. Other entrants include Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin and Alexander Zverev. Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are also part of the star-studded line-up.

The Rotterdam Open will get underway on Monday.
